Dibiri or Kerosene Lamp

A Dibri is a simple lamp with a Kerosene reservoir and Wick to burn. These were one of the first modern lamps used and have been used since the 1850s when kerosene production increased. The lamps were famous as they were safer than regular oil lamps and fairly easy to use.

The brightness is adjusted by a knob that raises the Wick or lowers it in size, thus increasing or reducing the brightness accordingly. There are more varieties of the Kerosene lamp, from the basic to the complex Hurricane Lamps (widely known as Petromax lamps in India).

The most widely used model in homes is the basic Kerosene lamp with a glass chimney to keep the flame steady and avoid it being blown out by the wind. After the introduction of electric lights, the usage of the Kerosene lamps was reduced. However, it is still being used in parts of Asia and Africa with no proper electricity.
