Dry Vegetation Fences

Collecting dry vegetation is a daily affair for people in the villages. The process is called "Sulli Porukuthal (சுள்ளி பொறுக்குதல்)" in Tamil. Dry vegetation is mainly collected for two reasons. One is to use it as fuel to cook, and the other is to make small fences, often referred to as Tatti (தட்டி) in Tamil.

These fences are usually made with small dried branches and the wastes of the previous season's harvest. These branches and reject are tied together with threads made from reeds or fresh barks. They are then assembled to create a wall of fence around a house or a farm.

These fences can be done by anyone and are often made by family members, each contributing in one way or another.

These fences are changed when they begin to brittle or rot. These fences allow complete waste usage without ending up in a landfill.
